About the Course

This course is available to dental assistants working in Orthodontic offices, as this is where you will complete your clinical skills. To register for this course, you will need your 8-Hour Infection Control and BLS certificates.

Once you register, I will send you the course lecture material. You will have two weeks to review and complete the lecture portion of the course. During these two weeks, an instructor will be available via email to answer any questions you may have.

The lab and preclinical portion of the course starts on Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm. You will return from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday to continue lab and preclinical skills. You will come in from 6 pm to 10 pm on Monday and Tuesday to complete the skills assessment. These days are also used for building confidence and increasing your skills before moving on to your orthodontic office and completing the clinical patient skill portion.

You will need to bring in a patient, where you can practice all of your skills for the weekend. Your patient's role is crucial in this process. If the class has two or more students, you and the other student can use the skills with each other instead of bringing in an outside patient.

The patient will come in on Friday from 8 pm to 9 pm to have separators placed and left in place until Saturday. This is to ensure that the patient is prepared for the skills practice on Saturday. On Saturday, they will return from 2 pm until 6 pm to have the separators removed and all the other skills you practiced that day performed on the patient for preclinical skills.

Patient volunteer qualification is at least 18 years old, not in ortho, has both molars on all four quadrants, not missing any teeth, no crowns, no bridges, and no excessive decay. The patient must have good, healthy teeth to qualify and will be coming in on Friday and Saturday for approximately 4 hours.
